Helping to meet local housing and employment need with a forward-looking development.
Our plans for the site have been shaped by four guiding principles: meeting housing need, creating jobs, sustainability, and connectivity.
Meeting housing need
The UK, and particularly Worcestershire, is in the midst of a housing crisis. Harkaway and the Worcestershire Parkway new settlement have the potential to contribute to meeting the housing needs of Wychavon District and the City of Worcester: which is the greatest generator of local housing need.
In addition, people are growing up in areas where they will be unable to afford a home if the shortage of homes is not addressed. As a result, it’s easy to see that the dream of having a place of your own to live and work risks being out of reach for a whole generation of local young families.
Without urgent action to deliver the right homes that are in the right location, this problem will only get worse. Worcestershire Parkway will help to address these needs, featuring a broad range of house sizes and tenures, including affordable homes. The site will also deliver the facilities people need for day-to-day living and recreation.
Delivering employment opportunities
It is not enough to simply provide new homes. Our plans also include extensive opportunities for employment, with 26.5 hectares of the site being devoted to industrial and logistics uses with associated office space. This will help to ensure that new residents can work near where they live, whilst also providing new job opportunities for existing local residents. This employment provision will mark a significant investment into the local economy.
Sustainability
Delivering a holistic approach to sustainability, building upon the three interconnected pillars of the economy, society and the environment, is one of our top priorities.
Our climate is changing, and we are considering a range of ways to achieve environmental sustainability: including the delivery of carbon neutral solutions; energy efficient housing designs or the effective development layouts.
Our proposals comprise the delivery of a landscape-led new neighbourhood that will include open space for new and existing residents to enjoy. Our plans include a biodiversity net gain of at least 10%, through the provision of a range of new habitats for local wildlife.
Connectivity
Connectivity is at the heart of the vision for Worcestershire Parkway and the Harkaway neighbourhood plays a critical role within this objective. The community is situated on one of the key active travel corridors that facilitate sustainable movement between the railway station and Worcester.
Ensuring that all residents and visitors are within walking distance to essential services and employment uses through a series of attractive green and blue corridors seeks to promote healthy lifestyles. By making it easier for people to walk, cycle, and use public transport, we can help to reduce the need for people to rely on cars to get around.
